The film opens with a melancholic, lonely atmosphere: the protagonist Justine Jones (played by Georgina Spelvin) is a woman in her 30s living a monotonous, empty life. She lives in a modest apartment in New York, stares at her pale face in the mirror, fills the bathtub with water, undresses and lies in it, then slits her wrists with a razor blade. The shots are slow and silent, accompanied by somber music, emphasizing her despair and isolation. She bleeds to death, and the screen gradually fades out.
Justine awakens to find herself in a bureaucratic office-like "limbo" (a purgatory-like transition place), where the gatekeeper Abaca (John Clemens) reviews her fate. Abaca informs her that although she lived a virtuous life and never did anything wrong, suicide is an unforgivable sin, condemning her to hell. Feeling it's unfair, Justine argues that her life was too pure and dull—she never truly "lived." If given another chance, she would indulge in one of the seven deadly sins: lust—to "earn" her place in hell. Abaca agrees to her request, allowing her a brief return to the human world to fully indulge her desires.
Upon returning, Justine is assigned a "Teacher" (Harry Reems) who guides her in exploring sexual pleasure. Her sexual awakening begins here, growing increasingly intense:
